Community grants application

Applying for a community grant

The 2008 community grants will be announced in late September. All applications for the 2008 round must be received by Monday 14 July 2008.

Australian Ethical donates 10% of its profit to useful charitable, benevolent and conservation projects. The grants are made from the shareholder profits of Australian Ethical Investment Ltd. The grants are not made from the investment trusts or superannuation fund managed by Australian Ethical.

The community grant process operates as follows:

  • Applicants must submit applications via the Australian Ethical website.
  • Applicants must demonstrate that they are a non-profit organisation with an Australian address.
  • Applicants must have a useful charitable, benevolent or conservation purpose. The grants cannot be awarded for other purposes. If your organisation is not seeking to carry out a useful charitable, benevolent or conservation activity under the terms of the Australian Ethical Investment Ltd constitution, your application will not be eligible.
  • All of Australian Ethical activities are guided by the Australian Ethical Charter. Organisations should consider the spirit of the charter when making an application.
  • The staff of Australian Ethical will vote on a shortlist of applications. The board of Australian Ethical will grant final approval. The primary source of information voters will use to make their decisions is the 200 word summary  provided by the applicant. It is important that the summary is a clear reflection of the organisation and its activities.
  • The community grants provided by Australian Ethical are donations. There is no GST component.
  • Deductible gift recipient (DGR) status is not a requirement for receiving a grant.
  • If your organisation is an incorporated body that also controls an entity with deductible gift recipient status (such as a fund) then any grant awarded must be directed to the deductible gift recipient entity.
  • Successful applicants must provide a receipt to Australian Ethical by Monday 20 October 2008.
  • There is always strong competition for grants. While all nominations complying with the company constitution and the Australian Ethical Charter will be considered, not all applications will be successful. Australian Ethical reserves the right to determine which applications meet the specified criteria, and the amounts to be awarded. Grants are allocated solely at Australian Ethical’s discretion and the process by which grants are allocated is confidential and may change from time to time.
  • The 2008 grant process is different to previous years, therefore previous grant amounts are not indicative of potential grant amounts in 2008.
  • Grants are conditional on the recipient agreeing to Australian Ethical using their name in the company’s publicity material, for example the Aim High newsletter.
  • Australian Ethical appreciates photos and feedback on the projects it supports. Photos may be used in the Aim High newsletter or placed on the company’s website.
  • Only authorised members or staff of the applicant organisation can submit an application on behalf of their organisation. The person preparing the application must have the consent of the organisation’s executive officer or president.
