2007 Grants - $50 000

Major grant recipient: The Australia Institute, ANU, Canberra.
Project: teaching materials on climate change for Australian schools

The Australia Institute was established in 1994 by various community members as an independent non-profit public policy research centre. It conducts research and policy analysis and participates in public debates on political, economic, social and environmental issues. The Institute is commissioned and funded by grants from philanthropic trusts, governments, business, unions and community organisations.

The Institute is active in promoting climate change initiatives and strategies such as the adoption of renewable energy sources. Part of this involves educating the community on the aspects and issues of climate change. With Australian Ethical’s funding, the Institute will develop an educational series on climate change for Australian high schools.

The grant will specifically go towards the production and dissemination of teaching materials designed to complement the existing curriculum. The series will cover a number of topical areas such as the science behind climate change, international agreements addressing climate change, the ethics and economics of climate change, comparing emission profiles between countries, policy considerations, and the debate on the nuclear alternative.
